What should be considered after braces are removed?

Orthodontic treatment can last for months or even years in some cases. The removal of the braces after this long process does not mean that the treatment has completely ended. To ensure that the teeth maintain their new positions and that the results are permanent after the braces are removed, certain points must be considered.

Why Is the Period After Braces Are Removed Important?

In orthodontic treatment, teeth are moved into their new positions by applying a specific force. However, the bone and tissues surrounding the teeth need time to fully adapt to this new position. If necessary precautions are not taken after the braces are removed, the teeth may begin to return to their former positions over time. Therefore, it is essential to follow the doctor's recommendations and not neglect oral care after treatment.

Use of Retainers (Retention Appliances)

The most important stage after orthodontic treatment is the use of a retainer (retention appliance).

-Fixed Retainer: Consists of a thin wire placed on the back surfaces of the teeth. It is invisible from the outside and remains in the mouth permanently. It is frequently preferred, especially for the lower front teeth. When using a fixed retainer, more attention must be paid to flossing and oral care.

-Removable Retainer: This is an appliance, usually prepared in the form of a clear aligner, that can be inserted and removed at specific times. Your dentist may recommend using it all day during the first few months and only at night in the following periods. Removable retainers should be taken out while eating and cleaned daily.

Oral and Dental Care

Regular oral hygiene habits should be maintained after the braces are removed. Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day, and flossing should not be neglected. Tongue cleaning should be performed. Mouthwash can be used as a supportive measure.

Regular Dentist Check-ups

It is important to continue regular check-ups even after orthodontic treatment is completed. The dentist checks the use of the retainer and the position of the teeth. In this way, any risk of tooth shifting is noticed early, retainer problems are resolved if they exist, and overall oral health is evaluated.

Pay Attention to Hard and Sticky Foods

After braces come off, patients—especially those using retainers—need to be careful with certain foods. Foods such as very hard-shelled items, sticky candies and caramels, gum, and hard nuts can damage the retainer appliance or create pressure on the teeth.

How to Reduce Sensitivity in Teeth?

Slight sensitivity may be felt in the teeth after the braces are removed. This situation is generally short-term and normal.

To reduce sensitivity, you can avoid very hot and very cold foods. You can use toothpastes designed for sensitivity. You should avoid harsh brushing movements. If sensitivity persists for a long time, it is recommended to consult your dentist.
